It is the 1930s and Korea is under Japanese occupation. The people of Korea lead lives of hardship under Japanese repression. The corrupt actions taken by pro-Japanese Koreans only worsen conditions for those seeking liberation. Seung Hee's father, a pro-Japanese Korean, tries to marry her off to Nomura, the son of a powerful Japanese official.
