Housewife Oikawa Kyok lives with her husband Shigenori and their two children. She has been leading an ordinary but happy life while working part-time at a supermarket. One night, a fire breaks out at Shigenori’s workplace, Syntech’s Honjo branch office. Kyoko gets a phone call about her husband suffering burns while on night shift, and meets him at the hospital. She is relieved that the burns are minor injuries. Shigenori, who was the first person to discover the fire, gives a statement about witnessing a suspicious individual, and the police begin the investigation as an arson attack. Kudo Kazumasa, the head of Honjo Police Precinct’s Criminal Affairs Division, instructs his men to include the possibility of this case being an act of retaliation due to previous trouble that Syntech had with a political organisation. Detectives Kuno Kaoru and Inoue Takashi conduct interviews at Syntech’s Honjo branch office. They learn that another employee initially was the one on duty on the night of the incident, but Shigenori, who is in charge of accounting, switched places because of an accounting audit the next day. Kuno and Inoue head to the hospital to question Shigenori about the circumstances (whether there was a problem with the accounts), but he denies it. Meanwhile, Kyoko has been told by Shigenori to come in the car to visit him. He wants her to leave it at the hospital so that he can put in an appearance at the company. The two detectives suspect Syntech’s Honjo branch office of cooking the books. They also know Shigenori had recently built a new house and bought a new car. Furthermore, he has spent large sums of money on gambling. As misgivings about Shigenori grows, Kuno continues to be kept awake by the memories of his wife who died in an accident seven years ago. In the early hours of the morning, information about another suspicious fire comes in, and he rushes to the scene. The police regard this as a crime by the same criminal because the tactic of starting the fire with kerosene in a plastic bottle is the same as the first case. Noticing something at the scene of the fire, Kuno heads to Shigenori’s hospital and discovers a car which is still hot in the car park. The owner of the car is Shigenori. The next day, Kuno and Inoue visit the Oikawa residence to question Kyoko. They ask her about Shigenori’s behaviour the night before and the money for the purchase of the car. Although Kyoko replies with a firm attitude, she is inwardly shaken that the police suspect her husband...
