The task of fighting monsters is in the hands of young literati, a demon hunter and a poet who sneak into the palace during the Lantern Festival. The city of Chang'an bustles with life yet demonic energy permeates the darkness. The public officials are entering the palace to attend the banquet for the Lantern Festival and among the attendees are the prime minister Ling Xuan Shang Shi and his beloved disciple Yue Ban Jiao. Yue Ban Jiao catches a faint glimpse of the imperial concubine's transformation into a tree demon and immediately tackles her in spite of her master's warnings for her to stop. The emperor throws Yue Ban Jiao to prison where she meets a young literati named Du Zi Teng. After the two escape, they meet the immortal swordsman Mister Bai.
