The wife of Chi-geun, the idiot street peddler, was born a beauty so the village boys endlessly try to seduce her. However, Chi-geun's wife truly loves her husband and is devoted to him for he is her savior. She rebukes all their advances. Hot with passion for her, the village boys make a bet over her and their advances grow more urgent but they all fail. The boys know that though Chi-geun peddles his food, he is also trying to gather funds from local influential people for the independence movement. Angered by her rebuffs, they give this information to the Japanese police. The Japanese torture Chi-geun terribly and he dies at their hands. His body is thrown into the river. The village boys are filled with guilt. A dejected Chi-geun's wife kills herself in front of the boys. -Asianwiki
