After the death of his wife, an old man begins to live alone in his old home in Iwate Prefecture. One year later, his youngest son Tetsuo, who lives in Tokyo, returns to his old home town and begins to discuss with his brothers and sisters on how they could take care of their father. Not long afterward, the old man knows that his days working at a tobacco farm on his own are numbered. He sets out to Tokyo to find his two sons and try to convince them to take over. However, he finds that his eldest son Tadashi is working hand-to-mouth for his own family, and Tetsuo has fallen in love with a deaf-mute factory girl, and they are about to get married.
