River Sunset is a Chinese-American co-production based on real events during World War II. It depicts what happened behind the scenes, leading to the Bombing of Tokyo. A story revolving around the Tokyo Raids in 1942.
At dusk on March 19, 1942, an Allied aircraft lands at Yangon Airport only to find that the Japanese military have taken over the territory. The aircraft attempts to flee but on the next day, the higher ups receive news that the aircraft has been shot down and the passenger has gone missing. They issue a rescue mission by reactivating Wumu Yilang (Zhang Luyi) into service. He is an underground spy who lives under the guise of a Japanese name and has been inactive for five years.
