The life of banker Kenzo Kasai and his wife Kazuko was one of continuous transfers from region to region and moves from one apartment to another. After retiring, they finally bought a “house of their own” and began their happy, stable life. Then one day, Kazuko collapses from a cerebral infarction. After completing rehabilitation, she is finally discharged from the hospital, but instead of returning home, she’s admitted to a long-term care facility. Kenzo visits her every day and cares for her lovingly, but Kazuko passes away before he can grant her wish of “returning home one day.” A few months later, alone in an empty house, Kenzo finally begins sorting through their personal belongings. Items that evoke memories he shared with his wife fill him with grief.
