Okajima Shinji works as an insurance agent for a decent wage in a time where jobs are scarce. Because his bonus ought to be arriving soon, he decides to splurge and spoil his family a bit—the centerpiece gift being a bicycle long promised to his young son. Things grow complicated when, on bonus day, a close friend and colleague is unjustly fired. Okajima stands up to the boss for him, but because he says too much, both men find themselves out of a job. In this silent-era film by director Ozu Yasujiro, viewers can expect a look at Depression-era Japan and the struggles faced by a family hurting for a steady income. It is also the last film of its star, Okada Tokihiko, who died of tuberculosis not long after his appearance.
